Stop paying modem rental

Reviewer: SCARD,
If you don't want to keep paying modem rent, buy one of these. It is easy to install, you just need to call your internet provider once you have your modem in your hands, and they will guide you through installation and activate it remotely. Return your rented modem, and start saving about USD$5 (varies) a month (once your purchase is paid off)

The unit sent t ome did not work after installation and set up with the cable company. I realize the unit was used. But they need to be checked out before shipping to a customer that they work. Very disappointed.

Arrived before scheduled delivery date in good condition. No problem for my cable guy to hook up and get going. Since it was used, I didn't expect a user's manual but would be nice to have. So far, I very satisfied both in product and seller.
Plays well with Charter

Reviewer: David K. Miller,
On the basis of several comments in these reviews, I purchased a used Surfboard 5120 cable modem from an Amazon partner to replace the modem leased from Charter. Activation with Charter took less than ten minutes and all I needed was the MAC number printed on the bottom of the modem. The Motorola modem is at least as fast as the leased equipment and it will pay for itself in six months. (I used another Surfboard modem with Comcast in the past and never had any problems with it.)
The best cable modem I've used

I currently have 8Mb/s service through Charter Communications. With my new Surfboard 5120 modem, I average speeds between 22 Mb/s and 35 Mb/s. With my old modem, I averaged less than 10 Mb/s. This works great for my network, which includes a computer, TV, Blu-Ray home theater, PS3, and my Dish network DVR. I highly recommend this modem.
Buy this so you don't have to pay your internet co a rental fee

As the title says. After 3 years of paying 3.50 a month to rent a modem I realized I could get an upgraded used version on Amazon for 25.00. I wish I would have realized this earlier, but it's my fault for just paying the bill and never looking at exactly what I was paying for. This will definately save you money if you are being forced to rent one. Just call your internet provider and give them the MAC addess of the new modem once it arrives. Set up and talking to the internet company only took a few minutes. I was renting a SB5100 and I can definately tell there is a speed boost with the SB5120.
cheap and used but works like new

Works better than SB6120

Reviewer: A. Cardaniuc,
Bought the newer model Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 to replace the leased SB5120 from Comcast and stop paying them $5/month for a modem lease.
Installed it and speakeasy test showed about the same speeds for download and upload, but the real download speed dropped from around 1.6Mbs to around 500Kbs with the newer one. I had a tech guy from comcast to come and check what was the problem with the newer one and they said (after many trials) that the newer one will work faster only if you have their speeds over 20Mbs, and actually will be slower than the older sb5120 even if the new sb6120 is backward compatible with docsis 2.0. ..that does not make much sense to me... anyway
Changed back and fourth the new (sb6120) and old (sb5120) under my account and comcast could not give me a good explanation why with SB5120 I get download speed at 1.6Mbs and with SB6120 only 400-500Kbs.. They said that I should get their higher speed service (20Mbs or 50Mbs) to get better speed with the new DOCSIS 3.0 modem..
..so I had to return the SB6120 and buy a used SB5120 from Amazon which works as fast as the one leased from comcast with downloads over 1.5Mbs.
I have comcast service of 12Mbs or 16Mbs... the real download speed (even with a download manager/accelerator) is around 1.5-1.8Mbs. That is enough for me and I don't plan to get higher than that very soon. So this modem it is great, works fine, no drops or other issues, no restarts., always on.
It will pay for itself in seven months (bought used).
